Q:What is the grace period for expired .NAME domains?

A:OpenSRS will hold a .NAME domain for 40 days after the expiry date. On the 40th day it will be deleted from our system. It will then take the .NAME registry 1 to 7 days to delete it from their system and make it available to the general public

Q:What is an auth code?

A:A transfer authorization code (auth code) is required when transferring any .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ, .US, .NAME and .CN domain name from one registrar to another. The transfer authorization code is created at the time of registration and can be obtained from the current registrar for the domain.

The auth code can be found in the "Domain Extra's" section of the Manage Interface - https://manage.opensrs.net

Resellers can also email the auth code to the admin contact email address listed for the domain. Simply log into the Resellers Web Interface, enter the domain into the "View Domain" field and click on the Query button. On the next page you'll find a link to send out the information.

Q:What format does the auth code need to be in?

A:The transfer authorization code (auth code) must be between 6 and 32 characters.

Q:What is a .NAME domain?

A:.NAME is the only gTLD that is available exclusively to individuals. It offers both domain name registration services and email forwarding.

Q:How long does a .NAME transfer take?

A:Due to Registry limitations, you cannot manage the domain name until 6 days after the transfer has been approved by the losing Registrar.

Q:Can I register doe.name if I have john.doe.name?

A:A second level registration (like doe.name) is not possible if there are other Registrants based on the same second level (ie: john.doe.name and jane.doe.name).

However, if you are the sole registrant in a 3rd level registration there is a process to make the 2nd level registration available for you to register.

1) Email support to check if the 2nd level is available. Remember if another Registrant exists under the the same 2nd level (ie: jane.doe.name) then this process stops here and you cannot get the 2nd level (ie: doe.name)
2) The 3rd level registration is deleted with no refund for the time remaining
3) There is a 5 day cooling off period (120 to 121 hours) after the deletion of the 3rd level before the 2nd level can be registered.

note: There is no guarantee that the 2nd level registration will be yours once the 3rd level is deleted. It's possible someone else may register the 2nd level once they see it's available.

Q:Why is my domain "inactive"?

A:All EPP based registries (org, .info, .biz, .us, .name and .cn) require that at least 2 name servers must listed for a domain name at all times. If there is only one name server listed the registry will place the domain into an "inactive" state and it will cease to work.

Q:What format does the phone and fax number have to be in?

A:All EPP based registries (org, .info, .biz, .us, .name and .cn) use the international phone number format:

+CCC.NNNNNNNNNNNNxEEEE

Where C = the country dial code, N is up to twelve digits of the phone number, and E is the extension. The x character is ONLY required if an extension is specified. For Tucows, this would be +1.4165350123 (where 1 is the dial code for Canada)

Q:How can I send out a domain username/password?

A:RSPs have the ability to send out the domain username/password to the listed Admin Email contact. In the "Domain Management" section of the Resellers web page, find the domain in question.

You can use either the "View Domain" or "Search Domains" link.

The link to send the login/password is at the very bottom of the Domain info. It also shows you the address that it will be sent to. ca domains will also have a link to send the CIRA password.

Only domain owners have access to this info. Since this is the only way to recover a lost password, please make sure the Admin Email is kept up-to-date.

If the admin contact email address is no longer valid, the listed domain owner must send us a signed fax on company letterhead, if possible, requesting that the address be updated. In the fax be sure that they include a copy of their government issued photo ID (Drivers License, Passport etc), the domain name and the new admin contact email address. Please have them fax it to 1-416-531-2516 ATTN: OpenSRS Support

For the registrants convience, we have created a pre-made PDF form that can be used as a template. You can find the form at http://rrc.tucows.com/resources/docs/adminemailchange.pdf

Q:What does "unable to verify existence of nameserver" mean?

A:Some registries such as .us, .info, .biz, .name, .org and .cc maintain their own databases of registered, valid name servers, rather then going by the VeriSign .COM/.NET Registry database.

If you are receiving "unable to verify existance of name server" error messages, it's likely due to the name server not being found in their database.

You can add your name servers to the various registries through the "Add Nameserver to All Foreign Registries " link in the resellers interface. Once added, you should be able to process your registrations.

Q:Are there any reserved .names?

at which the registry operator makes registrations.

icann

Q:Who runs the .NAME registry?

A:The .NAME registry is run by Global Name Registry (GNR). Their website can be found at http://www.nic.name

.NAME is an EPP-based Registry and their authorative whois database can be found at http://www.whois.name

Q:What are some of the restrictions/requirements for .NAME?

A:- All domains must be registered for 1, 2 or 10 year periods.

- The phone and fax numbers must be in the international format: +CCC.NNNNNNNNNNNNxEEEE
Where C = the country dial code, N is up to twelve digits of the phone number, and E is the
extension. The x character is ONLY required if an extension is specified. An example of this would be
+1.4165350123 (where 1 is the dial code for Canada/United States)

- .NAME's can only be registered in the 3rd level ex: john.smith.name or smith.john.name

- A transfer authorization code is required when transferring .info domain names from one registrar to another.

- All .NAME domains must have at least 2 name servers listed at all times.

- Maximum contact information field lengths of 30 characters (excluding email address field)

- .US domain names can only contain letters, numbers or hyphens.

- .US domain names cannot begin or end with a hyphen.

- Minimum of 3 / maximum of 63 characters allowed.

Q:Why does my contact information not change during the course of a transfer?

A:All EPP based registries (org, .info, .biz, .us, .name and .cn) will not allow contact information to be changed during the course of a transfer.
