Q:How do CN transfers work?![]()
A:The following describes the process for both Registrar-to Registrar transfers, and Reseller-to-Reseller transfers. Please note: Transfers can only be initiated after 60 days from the date of registration. Transfers from CNNIC registrars to Neulevel registrars are NOT supported. There is a five-day transfer pending period from the time that the transfer is requested. However, the transfer will complete as soon as it is acknowledged and will not remain pending for five days. Transfer Process 1. OpenSRS receives transfer request order. 2. OpenSRS sends an authorization e-mail to the domain admin contact with a URL to approve the transfer, and a temporary password to accept/reject pages. 3. The domain Admin Contact must also use the auth_code when approving a transfer. This code is obtainable from the current Registrar of Record and is domain specific. 4. If either the Admin Contact or OpenSRS cancels the request (on behalf of the Registrant), the entire transfer request is cancelled. 5. If the admin contact approves the transfer and includes the auth_code, OpenSRS sends the request to the Registry (same as existing gTLD process). 6. The Registry approves the transfer. 7. OpenSRS notifies the Reseller/Registrant of the successful transfer. 8. One domain year is charged to the Reseller and is added to the domain. The Reseller will then have 5 days in which to request a deletion of the transferred domain and a subsequent refund for the additional year that is added.

Q:How do I renew a CN domain?![]()
A:Select "Place Order Manually" from the RWI and type the domain name in the "Retrieve Order Information" section (if the username and password is remembered). If the username and password are not available, complete the form as if it was a new registration. Domains can be renewed for 1-5 year periods. Alternatively, domains can be set to auto-renew when registered. To do this, simply select YES in the appropriate auto renew field.

Q:What is an auth code?![]()
A:A transfer authorization code (auth code) is required when transferring any .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ, .US, .NAME and .CN domain name from one registrar to another. The transfer authorization code is created at the time of registration and can be obtained from the current registrar for the domain. The auth code can be found in the "Domain Extra's" section of the Manage Interface - https://manage.opensrs.net Resellers can also email the auth code to the admin contact email address listed for the domain. Simply log into the Resellers Web Interface, enter the domain into the "View Domain" field and click on the Query button. On the next page you'll find a link to send out the information.
![]() | |
Q:What format does the auth code need to be in?![]()
A:The transfer authorization code (auth code) must be between 6 and 32 characters.
![]() | |
Q:Why is my domain "inactive"?![]()
A:All EPP based registries (org, .info, .biz, .us, .name and .cn) require that at least 2 name servers must listed for a domain name at all times. If there is only one name server listed the registry will place the domain into an "inactive" state and it will cease to work.
![]() | |
Q:What format does the phone and fax number have to be in?![]()
A:All EPP based registries (org, .info, .biz, .us, .name and .cn) use the international phone number format: +CCC.NNNNNNNNNNNNxEEEE Where C = the country dial code, N is up to twelve digits of the phone number, and E is the extension. The x character is ONLY required if an extension is specified. For Tucows, this would be +1.4165350123 (where 1 is the dial code for Canada)

Q:Are there any restrictions on CN name registrations?![]()
A:Registrations in the .cn TLD space include both second level (.cn) and third level (com.cn, .org.cn and .net.cn) registrations. There are no registration restrictions and applicants must agree to abide by Chinese laws and regulations as laid out by CNNIC, the .cn Registry. Please visit: http://www.cnnic.net.cn/e-index.shtml for details. In addition, the applicant must consent to the CNNIC Domain Name Dispute Resolution Process. This process is modeled after the Uniform Dispute Resolution Process and requires that the complainant have a trademark of service and that there is evidence of bad faith. Currently, CIETAC and the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Association of Hong Kong both uphold the process. Please note that there are certain names that will not be available for registration. Consistent with ICANN, gTLD procedures, all two-character country codes will be reserved from registration. In addition, the ISO 3166 two-character country codes will also be reserved from registration by CNNIC. A complete list of reserved names can be found at: http://resellers.tucows.com/opensrs/releasenotes/cn. There are no proxy registrations whereby one individual on behalf of another cannot register a .cn domain name.

Q:What is the procedure for registering a CN domain?![]()
A:The following outlines the basic steps in registering a .cn domain name with the assumption that the name being requested is available. Note that the minimum registration period for .cn is 1 year up to a maximum of 5 years. Registrant Requests a .cn Domain The Registrant either submits their request for a .cn domain name through the RCL or notifies you directly to submit the request on their behalf via the ‘Place Order Manually’ link on the RWI. 2. Registration is Submitted to NeuStar Once the request has been submitted to OpenSRS, the system will then send the registration information to NeuStar, the Registry Gateway for CNNIC. 3. Registration Completes Upon receipt of the information, NeuStar issues the .cn domain name. You and the Registrant will then be notified by OpenSRS that the registration was successful and money will then be decremented from your account. Auth_Codes Once a Registrant successfully registers a .cn domain name, they are issued and ‘auth_code’. This code is a private pass phrase, which denotes verifiable proof of ownership for the domain. Please inform your Registrants to keep this code private and separate from the management username/password required to manage OpenSRS domains. If they wish to change their code, they can do so using the manage interface.

Q:How do CN renewals work?![]()
A:Except for the following points, renewal features for .cn are the same as they are for .com, .net and .org. (Refer to renewal subsections of section 6.0 for details). 1. A .cn name cannot be renewed for a period that exceeds 5 years, as this is the maximum registration period for .cn. 2. Auto-renew functionality is not available.
![]() | |
Q:Can my end-users manage CN names though the manage interface?![]()
A:.cn names can now be managed using the manage.cgi, or https://manage.opensrs.net. Please note the following: Registrants can obtain the Auth_code for .cn domains via the Manage Domain interface. Contact changes cannot be made while the domain is Locked.
![]() | |
Q:How do I sign up to sell CN domains?![]()
A:All you have to do is sign the .CN reseller agreement found in the Reseller Resource Center, then FAX it into Tucows. The FAX number is 1 416 531 2516
![]() | |
Q:What are the rules for CN Registrar transfers?![]()
A:.CN transfers can be performed like any other EPP base gTLDs as long as both registrars are authorized to sell .CN domains. Domain names cannot be transferred within the first 60 days of initial registration. Also, domain names scheduled to expire in fewer than 14 days will not be allowed to transfer. These rules are based on the fact that .CN does not have auto-renewal for expired names.
![]() | |
Q:How do CN name deletions work?![]()
A:Upon registering a .cn domain name, you will have 48 hours in which to delete it and receive a full refund. This is consistent with the OpenSRS deletion policy, which is applicable to all available TLD’s. Note: Deletions will not be applicable to applications

Q:How can I send out a domain username/password? ![]()
A:RSPs have the ability to send out the domain username/password to the listed Admin Email contact. In the "Domain Management" section of the Resellers web page, find the domain in question. You can use either the "View Domain" or "Search Domains" link. The link to send the login/password is at the very bottom of the Domain info. It also shows you the address that it will be sent to. ca domains will also have a link to send the CIRA password. Only domain owners have access to this info. Since this is the only way to recover a lost password, please make sure the Admin Email is kept up-to-date. If the admin contact email address is no longer valid, the listed domain owner must send us a signed fax on company letterhead, if possible, requesting that the address be updated. In the fax be sure that they include a copy of their government issued photo ID (Drivers License, Passport etc), the domain name and the new admin contact email address. Please have them fax it to 1-416-531-2516 ATTN: OpenSRS Support For the registrants convience, we have created a pre-made PDF form that can be used as a template. You can find the form at http://rrc.tucows.com/resources/docs/adminemailchange.pdf

Q:What are the rules for CN Registrant transfers?![]()
A:There are no specific rules for Registrant transfers. These types of transfers will be handled just like .BIZ and .US at the Registrar level.
![]() | |
Q:What does "PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE" mean?![]()
A:This means that the domain name in question is in the Redemption Grace Period.
![]() | |
Q:What does "unable to verify existence of nameserver" mean?![]()
A:Some registries such as .us, .info, .biz, .name, .org and .cc maintain their own databases of registered, valid name servers, rather then going by the VeriSign .COM/.NET Registry database. If you are receiving "unable to verify existance of name server" error messages, it's likely due to the name server not being found in their database. You can add your name servers to the various registries through the "Add Nameserver to All Foreign Registries " link in the resellers interface. Once added, you should be able to process your registrations.
![]() | |
Q:What are the reseller qualifications for CN domains?![]()
A:To qualify for selling .cn names, you must: a) Remit a new Reseller contract to OpenSRS authorizing you to act as an OpenSRS .cn domain reseller. b) Bind your customers to the .cn registration terms. Both of these documents can be found at: http://resellers.tucows.com/opensrs/contracts#cn You must post the .cn registration terms on your website. After having done so, e-mail ritebc@opensrs.org with the URL from your website where you have posted the agreement. The subject line of this e-mail should read as follows: Subject: {Reseller Username} *.CN Agreement Once Tucows has received the e-mail and has checked your website, you will then be able to offer .cn registrations. Note: If you do not post the agreement on your website, you must inform Tucows of the method that you have chosen to bind your customers to the agreement.
