Q:How do I perform UK domain name renewals?


A:There are two ways to renew your .UK domains under Renewal Management.

1. Using the Renewal command. This renews the domain immediately in OpenSRS. Resellers should be aware that renewal fees are processed immediately and are non-refundable. The renewal does not occur at Registry level until the domain expires.

2. Activating the Auto-renew flag. This will ensure that the renewal is performed and the order completed 30 days before the date of expiry (or within 24 hours if set at a time closer to the expiry date).

Please note that the auto-renewal functionality cannot be used for domains that are scheduled to expire within 10 days. These domains must be renewed using the renewal command.

If a domain is not renewed at the time of expiry, OpenSRS will disable the domain and send a notification to the Reseller. The notification includes information on how to recover a domain that should have been renewed. This can be performed up to the 24th day of the month following the month of expiry. After this point in time, the domain will be deleted at Registry level.


Q:My client is transferring and wants reimbursement for a renewal. Do I get a refund?


A:The renewal fees are non-refundable - even if a customer decides to transfer away after they paid the renewal fee and the Registry has not processed the transaction.

Please note that the Registry does not perform renewals prior to the domain's expiry date. We recommend that Resellers inform their customer's that even if they request a renewal before the expiry date - it will not be processed by the Registry until the time of expiration. Pre-expiry renewal requests only ensure that domains are automatically renewed.

Q:Why is my customer getting confirm requests when their UK domain is deleted?


A:When a domain name is not renewed, OpenSRS informs the Registry that the Registrant has requested that the domain name be deleted. At this point, the domain will be De-Tagged. The Registry will request confirmation from the Registrant before they release the domain name and make it available to others. The confirmation is part of the Registry's policies. This process takes place between the Registrant and the Registry. It does not involve OpenSRS or its Resellers.

Q:How do I renew .UK domain names for more than two years at a time?


A:UK domain names can only be renewed for two years at a time. We recommend that Resellers enable the auto-renewal flag immediately after registration for those customers that are expected to renew their domain.

Q:How do I transfer a .uk domain into my RSP account?




A:The first step is to contact the current Tag Holder (Registrar) to change the Domain's Tag to: TUCOWS-CA. If the current Tag Holder is unwilling to make this change, you can contact Nominet directly.

Once that has completed, you can use the "Transfer a domain" link in RWI to add the domain into your account. Please note that if the domain is expired, it will be renewed for the standard 2 years and the cost will be deducted from your RSP account.



Q:Can I register .plc.uk, ltd.uk, domains?


A:Due to the complicated processes required by these domains, we cannot offer new registrations. However, you can transfer in existing domains and mange them just like the other TLDs.

Q:What if the domain is with another OpenSRS RSP?


A:RSP2RSP transfers work for .uk as they do for .com. THe Admin contact confirms and the domain is transferred immediately. Please note that if the domain is expired, it will be renewed for the standard 2 years and the cost deducted from your RSP account.

Q:How do I transfer a .uk domain away from my RSP account?


A:The RSP can initiate a transfer away via "UK domain Tag Transfer away" on the RWI. Simply enter the new Tag and the domain name(s).

The End User can also do this via https://manage.opensrs.net under Domain Extras.

The process is entirely automated.



Q:How can I see when/if changes were made to my .uk domain?


A:For the End User, all changes are tracked in "Waiting Request" on https://manage.opensrs.net

The RSP can choose to have Emails sent via “Configure UK Retry and Failure Reporting” whenever a change request fails.



Q:How can I see registrations/renewals that have been submitted to Nominet?


A:The Reseller can see all billable transactions via "Requests Submitted to Registry" on RWI.

Q:How can I remove my personal info from the whois?


A:.uk domain owners can choose not to display their personal info via "Domain Extras" in https://manage.opensrs.net

Please note that only applies to domains owned by individuals, not companies.

Q:Can I register .me.uk domains?


A:Yes. .me.uk domains work exactly the same way as .co.uk and .org.uk

Q:How can edits be made to the appearance/spelling of a domain name?


A:Edits of UK domains are not available. However, if the reseller contacts Customer Support at support@opensrs.org within 48 hours of the domain name registration, then the name can be deleted and the fee refunded.


Q:I renewed a domain name that should expire. Can I change the status?


A:There is no grace period for UK renewals. If the domain has been requested for renewal, the order will be completed and there will be no refund. If the auto-renewal command is being used, the renewal order will not be completed until 30 days before expiry date. If the remaining time is less than 30 days, the request will be processed immediately. In this case, Resellers have the option to remove the auto-renew flag to prevent the domain from renewing.

Q:The renewal order is completed. Why does the WHOIS list the old expiry date?


A:Nominet, the Registry for UK, works asynchronously. They do not accept renewal requests until the Registrar is invoiced. The new expiry date on renewed UK domains may not appear in the WHOIS until 6-8 weeks after the old expiry date.

Q:Will the UK Registry accept renewals earlier than at the domain expiiry?


A:No. The registry for UK will only renew domain names at the time of expiry. Further, the WHOIS information will not be updated with the new expiry date until 6-8 weeks after the old expiry date has lapsed.

Q:How can I send out a domain username/password?


A:RSPs have the ability to send out the domain username/password to the listed Admin Email contact. In the "Domain Management" section of the Resellers web page, find the domain in question.

You can use either the "View Domain" or "Search Domains" link.

The link to send the login/password is at the very bottom of the Domain info. It also shows you the address that it will be sent to. ca domains will also have a link to send the CIRA password.

Only domain owners have access to this info. Since this is the only way to recover a lost password, please make sure the Admin Email is kept up-to-date.

If the admin contact email address is no longer valid, the listed domain owner must send us a signed fax on company letterhead, if possible, requesting that the address be updated. In the fax be sure that they include a copy of their government issued photo ID (Drivers License, Passport etc), the domain name and the new admin contact email address.
